Sail in
Abacos

Let us introduce you to one of our favourite destinations in the Bahamas, the tropical paradise island of Abacos.

With a year-round climate similar to Florida, miles of endless beaches and the chance to explore these vibrant islands, both on shore and at sea, Abacos has it all. Combining the rich heritage of boat building, naturally protected waters and colonial villages, we think that Abacos is the 'cay' to the Bahamas!

Only a one-hour flight from Fort Lauderdale, and just five hours from New York and seven hours from Los Angeles, paradise is just a short flight away.

A truly once in a lifetime TradeWinds experience, be sure that you don't miss out. Book your perfect escape on one of our luxury Bahamian Abacos yacht charters.

Itinerary

Here is sample itinerary of what you may expect while enjoying a sailing vacation with TradeWinds in the Abacos. Weather or other outside factors may mean that your Captain sets an alternative course.

Arrival Day

Upon arrival at Treasure Cay Marina, proceed to our office (located in room 1065) with our beautiful yachts docked just out front. Here you can check-in and drop off your luggage.  We invite you to explore the wonderful amenities of the resort; for example, just down the sidewalk is a fun restaurant called ‘Tipsy Tuna’ - where you can enjoy a swim at the pool bar or cool off with a nice refreshing cocktail.  Across the street is the world famous Treasure Cay Beach, voted one of the top 10 beaches in the world. There you will find Coco’s Beach Bar and Restaurant and there is even a golf course on site.

Boarding, snacks and welcome cocktail are at 5pm. We leave the dock shortly after boarding and anchor in the bay for the evening. Later we will enjoy dinner onboard and discuss the week’s agenda.

Cruising Day 1: SUNDAY

Once breakfast and the Captain’s Briefing are complete we will sail over to No Name Cay, aka ‘Piggy Island’, to visit with the swimming pigs of the Abacos and to do a little beachcombing. We will enjoy lunch in this pristine bay. Next we will sail over to Great Guana Cay - home of the famous Nipper’s Sunday Fun Day. Here our guests can walk the iconic white sand beaches, frolic in the tidal pools at the edge of the Atlantic, dance the afternoon away or simply relax on the yacht. There is something here for everyone.

Cruising Day 2: MONDAY

First stop of the day is a short sail over to Fowl Cay Marine Park, which is just outside the Sea of Abacos. Here we will dive and snorkel the Baby Eights, Tombstone B, or the Chutes and Ladder sites. After the dive/snorkel we will head back into the Sea of Abaco to anchor for lunch next to the Fowl Cay beach.  Look out for the rays and turtles who like to play here.  Following lunch we will enjoy a nice sail over to Matt Lowes Cay. This stunning cove is so incredible it looks like an artist’s rendition of what paradise should look like. It has several beaches and a bird sanctuary on the south end of the cay. This protected bay is a great place to kayak or paddleboard. There are several coral heads on the south side of the cay to snorkel, or you can simply bask in the tranquility of this special place.

Cruising Day 3: TUESDAY

As much as we love Matt Lowe Cay we have to leave for now and go visit Mermaid Reef. Here you will find the friendliest fish in the Abacos!  This snorkel site is loaded with many species of fish and turtles. Once all of the snorkelers are back on board we will set sail for TAHITI for Lunch!! Well, Tahiti Beach that is. It’s a great place to take that holiday card photo!   Next stop, Little Harbor. This picturesque harbor has an interesting and colorful history.  It was a homestead owned by the Johnston Family of artists in the early 1950’s, and today it remains one of the most unique places in the Bahamas. You will enjoy dinner ashore at Pete’s Pub - home of the Blasters!

Cruising Day 4: WEDNESDAY

Just after breakfast we can tour the Johnston Family foundry and gallery, swim with the turtles or snorkel the Little Harbor Marine Park. You might also want to kayak or paddleboard over to the caves located on the west side of the harbor, or search for the sunken treasure chest. When you finished exploring Little Harbor we will head over to Sandy Cay Marine Park for our next dive/snorkel. Here you will find spotted eagle rays, reef sharks and a plethora of pelagic fish. Our next stop is a short trip to Tilloo Bank where the gorgeous Bahamian turquoise waters are home to starfish, sand dollars, rays and at times a pod of dolphins. We plan for you to enjoy a bonfire on the beach for Captain’s Cocktail hour.

Cruising Day 5: THURSDAY

There is more!!!! The next stop on your Abacos visit will include a visit to a secret spot just off Lubbers Quarters. We will snorkel a sunken barge with lots of fish. Look for the shy puffer fish who spends time there. Our next stop is Hopetown, which is on Elbow Cay. Here you will have the opportunity to climb the historic Hopetown Lighthouse. This is one of the last hand-cranked lighthouses in the world! This charming settlement (home to many of the descendants of the Loyalists) is rich in history and Bahamian culture. You will end your day anchoring at Man-O-War Cay, home to the famous Albury boat builders.

Cruising Day 6: FRIDAY

After a delicious breakfast we will set sail for Fowl Cay Marine Park for the next dive/snorkel. Look for Garry The Grouper, a friendly fish who enjoys interacting with the divers. For those who want one more chance to beachcomb, we will stop at Spoil Cay where you can find the last few treasure of the week.  After lunch we will sail towards Treasure Cay. We will enjoy Captain’s Cocktails at the dock, followed by our farewell dinner onshore.

Departure Day: SATURDAY

After breakfast, we swap email address and photos and we send you home with great memories and anticipation for your next Trade Winds vacation. We will arrange a taxi to pick you up and take you to the airport or to your hotel.

The guests on both boats enjoyed the scavenger hunt put on by V at Little Harbor.
