Sail in
Exumas

With sapphire-blue water everywhere, The Exumas are an exotic collection of dream destinations. Palm fringed beaches and super-exclusive resorts and islands  make this tropical paradise an absolute gem.  The Exumas truly are the ultimate escape.

The Exumas are an archipelago of 365 cays and islands, beginning just 35 miles southeast of Nassau. Once called Yumey and Suma (names of Amer-Indian origin), the islands have gone through many changes over the years. Today, they’re divided into three major areas: Great Exuma, Little Exuma and The Exuma Cays. Each offers its own unique Bahamian experience.

Great Exuma and Little Exuma are known for their laid-back surroundings, while The Exuma Cays act as a playground for the rich and famous, boasting numerous private homes, luxury resorts and beachside condos.

We will sail out of Nassau's Paradise Island Marina on New Providence island, and also from Georgetown Marina on the island of Great Exuma.
Itinerary

We'll sail out of Nassau's Paradise Island Marina on New Providence island, and also from Georgetown Marina on the beautiful island of Great Exuma

Please note that there are two different itineraries for the Exumas:  from Nassau south to Great Exuma, and from Great Exuma north to Nassau.  Guests can choose at which location they will join the vessel.

Itinerary number 1 - Southbound Cruises (From Nassau to Great Exuma)

This is a sample itinerary. Weather or other outside factors may mean that your skipper sets an alternative course.

Arrival Day

Boarding will begin at 5pm at Paradise Island dock in Nassau. You will be welcomed aboard by your First Mate and Captain with a cool refreshing cocktail, and after unpacking you will be served a gourmet dinner onboard.  Afterwards, you can perhaps take a trip to the huge and world-class Casino here, before the yacht departs for an overnight sail to Allan's Cay.

Cruising Day 1: Sunday

Wake up on Sunday morning to one of the most unspoiled beaches in the region;  sheer bliss, especially  after the hectic life of Nassau!  Spend the day exploring these small cays nestled close together, snorkeling and beach-combing.   Watch out for the large iguanas which are always looking for food! Or why not just kick back and read a book!  As ever, it’s your choice. Later, we’ll set sail for a sundown cocktail cruise to Normans Cay, where we will overnight under the watchful eye of the ruins at Battery Point - an old English gunnery position.

Cruising Day 2: Monday

After breakfast we’ll dive or snorkel one of the many spots this beautiful island has to offer,  before upping anchor and moving to Hawksbill Cay to have lunch, and then snorkel with the huge number of turtles this pretty little island has to offer.  After lunch we move on again … this time to Warderick Wells Cay, the home of the Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park. The prolific coral heads which dot the waters make for sensational snorkeling and diving, plus there are many marked trails to explore on the island for a glimpse of local flora and fauna. We will also visit the Park Headquarters, including a fascinating museum. After a busy afternoon sightseeing, your crew will serve another scrumptious dinner aboard.

Cruising Day 3: Tuesday

An early morning move gets us to the infamous Cambridge Cay; well-known in the 80's as a stop off for the drug smugglers! This is now a private island with some amazing trails, and there are several plane wrecks here. After breakfast we will dive the world famous O'Brien’s Wall, where there is spectacular visibility and an incredible drop off.  Pristine coral and huge schools of fish demand your attention, and the dive ends in shallow turquoise waters with a small plane wreck! After lunch we will move to the stunning rocky Dundas, where we will tie up the dinghy, and explore the islands’ cave-systems and shallow reefs at the south east of the island. There is also a trail leading to Honeymoon Beach, where your captain will make cocktails. We will overnight in one of the special bays or inlets this small group of Cays has to offer.

Cruising Day 4: Wednesday

Wednesday morning after breakfast we will move to Staniel Cay, where we will visit the world-famous site of the Thunderball movie and Thunderball Grotto. We are sure that everyone remembers James Bond and this scene! The snorkeling in this cave-system is amazing, totally bursting with marine life.  Later, we will move to Staniel Cay Yacht Club to take dinner ashore at the world famous Club Thunderball.

Cruising Day 5: Thursday

Thursday morning will see us swimming with the famous pigs of Big Major Cay.   Yes, we did say pigs, and yes, they do swim! And they drink beer – they are totally amazing!  After this stop we will pop across the channel to dive and snorkel the truly spectacular Aquarium – with gin clear visibility; teeming with marine life and colorful corals.   Then we’re off again, on to Lee Stocking Island, home to the Caribbean Marine Research Group, who have done extensive research on lobsters, grouper and conch, among other species.  After lunch we will have a tour of this very interesting and important facility, and then go and snorkel the gorgeous coral heads right off the beach!

Cruising Day 5: Friday

Friday morning will see us move to Black Cay - the old hangout of many a famous pirate (the best known being the infamous Captain Kidd)!  Pretty beaches and stunning visibility make this the perfect place to dive, snorkel , and beach-comb.  If you’d rather take it easy, why not just lay back and chill over a refreshing cocktail, while looking out over the stunning turquoise waters?   As the sun goes down, it’s time for a sunset cocktail cruise into Georgetown. The Tropic of Cancer runs through a beach just north of this fun little Caribbean town, which was named after King George of England by the loyalists who left the USA during the revolution!  Here you will have a fantastic meal ashore and explore Georgetown’s intriguing history.

Departure Day: Saturday

All too soon it’s departure day, and after breakfast you will depart the Georgetown Exuma Yacht Club Marina at 9am for your flight back to Nassau, or to the USA.  First, though, we swap email addresses and photos, and then we send you home with great memories and anticipation for your next TradeWinds sailing vacation.  We will arrange a taxi to pick you up.
